Understanding hallmarks and precious-metal purity

A practical introduction to fineness marks, metal descriptions and the questions buyers should ask.

What purity means

Gold and silver jewellery is commonly made from an alloy rather than pure metal. The purity mark indicates how much precious metal is present. For example, 750 gold describes an alloy containing 75 per cent gold, while 925 is widely associated with sterling silver.

Why marks matter

A clear and accurate mark helps a buyer understand what is being purchased. It also supports fair comparison between products and strengthens accountability across the trade.

Check the full description

A mark is only one part of an informed purchase. Ask the jeweller for the full product description, details of gemstones, care instructions and a proper receipt that records the item and its stated quality.
